It has taken a long time for Dodgeball 2 to get off the ground, but it now looks like Vince Vaughn and co are returning for a long awaited sequel to the 2004 comedy. While there is still a long way to go before the movie even starts filming, speculation about who may or may not be back for a second game is underway, and one name that has previously cropped up is the one and only Chuck Norris.

As well as being the stuff of internet meme legend, Chuck Norris also made a cameo appearance in the original sports comedy, and it seems he would be more than willing to do it all over again in the sequel. During his recent appearance at Nashville Comic Con, the action here was asked about the possibility of joining the new movie, he said:

"I haven't gotten a call about it yet, but it'd be a lot of fun to make a return appearance.”

Of course in the original movie, Norris played a Dodgeball tournament judge, and there is no reason why his character could not show up again in the sequel. Considering Norris’ continued popularity among social media users, it would be a satisfying little moment for everyone to see him back one more time.

The legacy sequel is alive and well right now, with 20-30 year old franchises seeing some reasonable success with belated follow ups and revivals. However, that doesn’t mean every film to try and capture a new audience as well as please old fans can be a success. Much of the popularity of movies like Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the upcoming return of Indiana Jones have been down to the original cast returning to deliver a strong sense of nostalgia to a new story.

Dodgeball didn’t really need a sequel per se, and previously star Justin Long suggested that he would love to do the sequel, but believed that Ben Stiller, who starred opposite Vaughn, was a little more reserved about possibly reprising his role. Long said:

"Of course I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little, what he told me on that podcast was that he's a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much that. It's very risky, you don't wanna s--t on the original, you want something just as good.”

Just like Ian Malcolm said in Jurassic Park, sometimes people spend too much time wondering if they could, and don’t stop to ask themselves if they should. It seems that while Stiller is still on the fence, Vaughn has made up his mind that a sequel is worth doing, and the projects has been set with 20th Century Studios. It will still be some time before we see if the script turns out to be good enough to move ahead with, but for now, it seems like the rematch is on.
