Tim Burton proved himself as a wonderfully wacky director to be reckoned with following the release of Beetlejuice, his second feature film, in 1988. It was a financial, critical, and award-winning success (having won the Academy Award for Best Makeup). On top of that, it was a career-defining role for Michael Keaton, who would go on to play Batman the following year, and it introduced most moviegoers to 17-year-old Winona Ryder for the first time.
