Summary

  • Chris Evans initially hesitated to take on the role of Captain America due to the anxiety and uncertainty that came with fame and loss of control.
  • Despite his reservations, Evans became deeply connected to the character and measured himself against Captain America's traits.
  • While it's uncertain if Evans will return as Captain America, the concept of the multiverse opens up possibilities for him to play different versions of the character or even take on a different role, such as Johnny Storm in Deadpool 3.

Being part of a huge franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be a big dream for most actors. However, for some others like Chris Evans, that dream also came with great responsibility and a lot of pressure, something the actor wasn't sure he wanted to deal with.

Evans has become, along with Robert Downey Jr. and the rest of the stars behind the main Avengers team, one of the great emblems of Marvel Studios. His portrayal of Steve Rogers aka Captain America is one of the most acclaimed within the franchise and of his entire career, making him one of the most coveted names in Hollywood nowadays.

But for an actor who has always tried to keep a low profile, the fame and exposure that came with the role was not such a welcome gift. In a recent interview with GQ conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the actor confessed that initially he was not sure if he wanted to face all the challenges that came with joining the MCU:

"I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty. You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?

The pros were that I’d be able to take care of my family forever; the cons were that I would become deeply, deeply unhappy with fame and loss of control.

I love playing that role. I feel connected to it in a way that when you revisit a character so many times you can’t help but try to absorb some of their traits and measure yourself against them."

Will Chris Evans Play Captain America Ever Again?

While some of the core members of the Avengers like Thor and Hulk seem to remain part of the franchise's present, others like Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, and Steve Rogers himself have become part of its history. Of course, in some cases that is because they are no longer part of the world of the living, and in others because a new hero has arrived to inherit their mantle.

However, now that the MCU has introduced the concept of the multiverse, the fate of no actor is final, as they can return playing different versions of their characters, or even appear in some time-traveling adventure. So there are chances of seeing Evans' Captain America in some form. In fact, the actor has already addressed this matter, although he didn't seem so keen on returning as Steve Rogers.

But of course, there is also the possibility to play a different role. Rumors about Deadpool 3 indicate that Jessica Alba is one of the surprise cameos for the film, where she would reportedly appear playing her version of Sue Storm from The Fantastic Four, a film she starred in alongside Evans. This has led to speculation whether Evans could in that case make his own appearance as his character from that movie; Johnny Storm. Of course, there is still a long way to go to find out which Deadpool 3 rumors are true, and that means a lot more time for more fan theories to surface.
