What can be definitively said about King is that his novels, novellas, and short stories were tailor-made to be adapted into major films. Today, there are around 60 films based on Stephen King's works, with that number continuing to grow in recent years.

We picture vampires as having flawless skin, dressed in expensive clothes, and having six-pack abs. They are human, but without the weaknesses. The vampire has widely been romanticized. They have become more fantasy than fear.

No, it wasn’t an epic, cinematic crossover event between the respective action and horror franchises. Sadly, it’s a signifier of this weekend’s abysmal box office results. Summertime slips quietly away, and the fall moviegoing season has begun. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of “going” to cinemas happening, and The Nun II edges out Expend4bles by the narrowest of margins.

<![CDATA[The Highest-Grossing Slasher Movies of the 2000s]]> The 2000s were an interesting time for horror cinema, particularly the slasher genre. While the franchise dominated the late 70s and 80s thanks to characters like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Leatherface, the genre never quite recaptured those heights ever again. While the 1990s saw the genre slightly rebound with Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the 2000s were the decade in which it seemed like the slasher was a dying trend.

<![CDATA[The 30 Best Apocalyptic Movies of All Times, Ranked]]> The idea of the apocalypse has always fascinated humanity, testified to by the fact that religions incorporate it into their eschatologies and artists utilize it as a literary device. It only makes sense that the most sensorial artistic medium, cinema, would embrace the genre as a way to reflect contemporary fears and concerns, dating back to 1916’s aptly titled The End of the World (which itself illuminated worries over the then-recent Halley’s Comet). With global pandemics and the cataclysmic effects of climate change upsetting our daily lives, the end of the world is on our collective minds more than ever, so it only makes sense to catalog the best apocalyptic films.

John Carpenter’s Halloween franchise is without dispute the pumpkin king of All Hallows’ Eve. The Halloween franchise has 13 entries across at least four timelines. Originally, the plan was for the franchise to tell a different story set on Halloween with each sequel. The second film moved forward with Myers returning, and when the franchise tried to go back to the anthology concept with the third entry, Season of the Witch, audiences rejected it, and Myers would be brought back for ten more films, including a remake by Rob Zombie and a ret-conned legacy sequel trilogy from David Gordon Green.

A few films after he began making feature films (before this, he had directed the music videos for Madonna's Vogue and Aerosmith's Janie's Got a Gun, among others), Fincher became a sought-after director in an industry that didn't necessarily highlight genre film directors.

<![CDATA[Candyman: A Look at the Short Story Behind the Beloved Horror Movie]]> 1992’s Candyman is based on a short story, The Forbidden, by Clive Barker (director of Hellraiser and Nightbreed) in his six-volume collection, Books of Blood. The Forbidden appears in volume five, and the story is only 37 pages long. Typically, screenplays and prose break down to about a page per minute. Novellas of about 100 pages translate easiest to the popular movie length/structure of 90 minutes. The brevity of The Forbidden means the screenwriter/director, Bernard Rose, was free to take liberties, but also had the challenge of doubling the length of the narrative. As a result, Candyman has numerous changes from Barker’s urban fairy tale.

<![CDATA[Horror Movie Twists That Don’t Get Enough Recognition]]> Many film genres employ twists as a plot device or a way to completely shock the audience. Plot twists keep those watching on the edge of their seats as we piece together what was just revealed and try to figure out where the story will go from there. Twist endings make us question everything we just watched and leave us wondering why the twist happened the way it did. A genre that excels at including plot twists is undoubtedly the horror genre. Horror filmmakers often use twists like their lives depend on it, and that need to shock the audience has created some of the best twists in not just horror history, but in film history. Take James Wan for example, he works primarily in horror and has devised some pretty incredible twists, such as the ending of the first Saw movie. Movies such as The Mist, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Sixth Sense have some of the most talked about twists in cinema.

<![CDATA[This Place Is Evil: Top 10 Horror Movies That Take You to Terrifying Locations]]> We love a haunted house. There is something so mystifying about a building so ancient and dipped in tragedy that the remnants of the past have stuck around to make themselves felt. Haunted houses remind us that the spaces we occupy don’t belong to us, and that maybe we should be afraid of things that go bump in the night. That said, the Haunted House as a concept, has of late fallen into disrepair and ironically become an echo of its former self. Though movies like Insidious try to flip this script, eventually they too have fallen prey to the clichés they were once subverting.

<![CDATA[15 Horror Movies That Are Basically All Jump Scares]]> Horror movies come in all shapes and sizes. There’s psychological horror, so-called “elevated” horror, creature features, zombie features, ghost stories - you get the point. While some movies rely on atmosphere and tone to create that creeping feeling of dread, other movies utilize jump scares to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. What constitutes a jump scare? Basically, any time there’s an abrupt, hard cut and a LOUD, JARRING noise meant to startle the audience - that’s a jump scare. Sometimes it can be cheap (like the “jumping cat out of nowhere” cliché, or relying on non-diegetic music cues to startle the audience), but if used properly by a director who knows what they're doing, jump scares can be wildly effective (like the birthday party scene in Signs - you know the one).

Twilight, Interview with the Vampire, and Only Lovers Left Alive are among some of the films that have made bloodsuckers romantic leads.

The obvious draw in the newly emerged streaming service is its ability to incorporate films that viewers can't seem to find on other streaming networks, thanks to the rich archives of Paramount Pictures dating back a century. For fellow horror fanatics, the fact that Paramount+ tends to stream a wide variety of projects, going back to the '50s and earlier, is an apparent pro in paying for the monthly subscription. It's not just the fact that Paramount+ has earlier released films, but it's also the mixture of both new and exclusive releases (including original TV shows on Paramount), along with the incorporation of cult classics, that makes the membership worthwhile.

<![CDATA[The 10 Most Controversial Horror Movies of the 1990s]]> The '90s have always been considered a "lightweight" decade for horror. Audiences and critics tend to look down on the decade because supposedly it isn't as iconic as the '70s or '80s when reformulating the basic rules of the genre, or when setting a trend that would be valid for years. The reality is that every decade has their own set of icons, rules, detractors, and fans. The '90s were as important as others, and the argument gets stronger with remarkable entries like The Sixth Sense, The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en and Scream. It's uncanny how some can still consider it a lesser period in horror.

<![CDATA[Saturn Bowling Review | A Captivating and Violent Dive Into Hereditary Brutality]]> There are few movies like Saturn Bowling. At least few good ones. Saturn Bowling spends its first half with the film's antagonist, before switching lanes to finally focus on the protagonist as he investigates the horrific crimes committed by the film's villain. This is by no means a spoiler, as the movie's antagonist is shady from the start. It's certainly not the only horror/thriller that puts the film's antagonist front and center; take American Psycho for instance. Like that film, Saturn Bowling succeeds by relentlessly exploring the dark heart of its antagonist at the forefront, captured in an incredible performance.

<![CDATA[12 Movies Marketed as Horror That Weren't Really Scary]]> There is no denying that one of the most popular and fun genres to market is horror. Scary movies have been a fundamental part of cinema since the beginning of film history (arguably since those first silent motion pictures where trains charged directly toward the camera, terrifying audiences). Some audiences love to get scared and leave the movie theater afraid of what might await them in the dark corners of their room. However, this can lead to many movies getting marketed as horror, even if they aren't that scary. What makes something scary is very subjective. What is frightening for some may not affect others (the Zodiac Killer, for instance, infamously thought that The Exorcist was "the best satirical comedy that [he'd] ever seen").

Though it usually has negative connotations, the implication of something deviating from the norm and wandering away from tradition may seem more and more appealing in a theatrical landscape saturated with reboots and sequels. Even mainstream audiences seem to be growing tired of the same Disney remakes, comic book sequels, and rebooted intellectual properties. Maybe they're ready for something truly aberrant — the very first horror from Mongolia to come to American theaters.

<![CDATA[16 Realistic Horror Movies That Are Hard to Watch]]> What classifies a movie as horror? Is it that it makes our stomachs flip into our throats in shock? Is it that it burrows into our psyche like a parasite and stays with us, like a stench we can't wash off? Or, perhaps, is it that in a possible, not entirely distant reality, we realize that the events we are choosing to be entertained by, aren't all that far-fetched after all? The iconic horror villain has outlived his monster brothers and sisters with a franchise that predates most competing brands and is still receiving installments well after the others have either stalled out or become tangled in legal battles. The Halloween franchise is commendable in that four decades after the first film was released, audiences are still eager to watch Michael wreak havoc on Haddonfield, and there's someone still willing to fight the Shape.

<![CDATA[Satanic Hispanics Review | A Spooky Anthology Film That Celebrates Latino Culture]]> Horror anthology movies are not anything new. For decades, we have seen the horror genre pump out numerous anthology movies that tell many different short stories that are not always wholly connected to the films main plot. Films like Trick' R' Treat, The ABC's of Death, and VHS are just a few of the many examples of great horror anthologies. It's an underrated genre, with few masterpieces but lots of pretty great films. Keeping that tradition alive is the 2023 horror anthology, Satanic Hispanics.

Right on time for spooky season and in commemoration of the horror classic's 50th anniversary, moviegoers will have the chance to view one of the scariest movies ever made on the big screen. The limited engagement features a 4K version of the extended director's cut, which amps up the terrifying visuals and includes that memorable down-the-stairs spider walk (that didn't make it to the original film version) and an alternate ending. A tribute, hosted by film historian Ben Mankiewicz, to the late great Friedkin, who passed away on August 7 at 87, will lead the screenings.
