Indian cinema may be considered an underdog in this trend, with hits from studio centers around the country, from Bollywood to Tollywood and Kollywood. Of these centers, Bollywood has reigned supreme for quite a while. It has remained one of the most popular film genres among Hindi-speaking audiences for the past 50 years. The 2022 release of the Telugu-language epic RRR, however, has acted as a major turning point in the acclaim of Indian cinema. While it may take another equally entertaining title to recreate this phenomenon, this has shown how Indian filmmakers are deeply in touch with the qualities that make a movie quintessentially Indian.
